Presentation Title: The Role of Packaging Manufacturers in the Framework of the Zero Environmental Footprint Goal
When one considers the needs of the Circular Economy we think adopting a “Zero Environmental Footprint” strategy is the best choice for the packaging industry in the same way that a few years ago “Zero Carbon Footprint” was the most popular topic. What does this mean: For us it means ensuring that a tonnage of post consumer scrap of plastic and aluminum packaging material equivalent to our production is recycled and does not end in landfills, oceans or nature. How: Is it possible to make identical new packaging material out of post consumer scrap of packaging material? Yes and the European Commission prefers it but current technology is insufficent to ensure it and investing in it may be a waste. The case of aluminum: it is best recycled in building materials, cars etc. The case of plastic: it is best recycled in textiles and other plastic products. In both cases demand outstrips supply so there is no reason why all members of the supply and value chain working together cannot ensure that the goal above is reached.
