Dr. Pattra Maneesin

Dr. Pattra Maneesin is the Deputy Governor lndustrial Services, Thailand lnstitute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR). Prior to obtaining Ph.D. in Packaging from Michigan State University in 2001, Dr.Pattra received B.Sc. in Agricultural lndustry from King Mongkut's lnstitute of Technology, Ladkrabang and M.Sc. in Post- Harvest and Food Process Engineering from Asian lnstitute of Technology (AiT).

She has more than 30 years experiencesin doing researches in food packaging. Dr. Pattra has also been a guest speaker and special lecturer on packaging and food packaging related topics. Her area of research includes active and modified atmosphere packaging, shelf life extension of food products, export packaging tor fresh produces, environmentally friendly packaging ete.

Currently, Dr. Pattra has also served as the Secretary General of the Asian Packaging Federation (APF).

Presentation Title: Biodegradable: Applications, Standards and Testing

Biodegradable products can be produced from either petrochemicals or renewable resources e.g. corn, cassava and sugarcane ete. and will be return to the ecosystem cycles after use. Since they can be degradable under specific conditions wi t hin a short period of time and do not harmful to the environment. However, some confusion has been raised whether the plastics are totally degraded and how to ensure that the plastics are biodegradable. Thus, the presentation will illustrate some commercial applications of biodegradable plastics commonly used in the market e.g. PLA, PHA, PBSA ete. in addition , testing and analysis of biodegradable plastics in comply with the international standards will be highlighted.
