As a Senior Policy Officer at EMF, I leverage my 17 years of
experience in R&D, packaging design and sustainability policy to advance
the circular economy agenda for plastics and packaging. Prior to joining EMF, I
worked at Procter& Gamble as a Senior Scientist, at A.I.S.E (the
International Association for Detergents and Maintenance Products) and have been an expert evaluator for the
European Research Executive Agency to evaluate Horizon 2020 projects. I hold a
double majör in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from METU and strongly
believe in the role science and multistakeholder collaboration plays to
transition to a circular economy.
Presentation Title: A Circular Economy for Plastic
Packaging
The Global Commitment, launched in 2018 by the Foundation
and the United Nations Environment Programme has mobilised over 1,000
organisations behind a common vision and aligned 2025 targets, underpinned by
common metrics and definitions. Despite concerted and ambitious industry
initiatives, such as the Global Commitment, the world is off track to eliminate
plastic waste and pollution — with scaling reuse being identified as one of the
key pivotal hurdles to overcome. Moving from single-use to reuse models presents
one of the biggest opportunities to reduce plastic pollution and significantly
reducing virgin material use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and water
consumption.
